Arizona Cardinals stun Eagles as Jonathan Gannon returns to Philadelphia (2024)

The Arizona Cardinals (4-12) and Philadelphia Eagles (11-5) played on Sunday, Dec. 31 at Lincoln Financial Field in a game on theNFL Week 17 schedule. Look back at our coverage from the game.

Arizona Cardinals stun the NFL with upset of Eagles

James Conner carried the ball up the middle with 32 seconds remaining as the Arizona Cardinals upset the Philadelphia Eagles.

Arizona started the drive on its own 30 and used seven plays to get the go-ahead score.

Greg Dortch proved himself hard to tackle as he caught a pass along the sideline and fought his way to the middle for 36 yards. That play set up a part of Conner's carries that resulted in the touchdown.

The Arizona defense then held off Jalen Hurts and the Eagles.

Kyler Murray was 25-for-31 passing for 232 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Conner had 26 carries for 128 yards. Dortch led Arizona with seven catches for 82 yards.

Hurts was 18-for-23 for 167 with three TDs for the Eagles. He threw an interception as time expired.

The Cardinals were more dominant than the final score suggests.

Arizona had more first downs (32-17), total yards (449-275), and time of possession (39:39-20:21).

Each team turned the ball over once — Philadelphia on the final play of the game; Arizona with an interception that was returned 99 yards for a touchdown.

Cardinals 35, Eagles 31 (Final)

Eagles in front late in fourth

Jake Elliott kicked a 43-yard field goal to put the Eagles up 31-28.

It was a solid defensive series for the Cardinals, who attempted an onside kick that gave the Eagles possession on the Cardinals 44.

Philadelphia took 2:53 off the clock with the drive, which might have the Cardinals in good position.

Matt Prater, the Cardinals kicker, is known for his ability to make field goals from great distance. That could tie the game should the Cardinals not score a touchdown.

Eagles 31, Cardinals 28 (2:33 Q4)

Michael Wilson emerging for Cardinals

Receiver Michael Wilson is making his presence known against the Eagles.

Wilson caught his fourth pass from Kyler Murray and this one was a 5-yard game-tying reception. He has four catches for 35 yards against the Eagles after not having a catch since mid-November.

The key part of the drive was a 29-yard penalty against the Eagles for pass interference. There was plenty of contact between Arizona's Greg Dortch and Philadelphia's Kelee Ringo on the play, but the penalty could have gone either way.

Michael Carter had a carry of 18 yards and Murray scrambled for 14.

Arizona attempted an onside kick, which was covered by the Eagles.

Eagles 28, Cardinals 28 (5:26 Q4)

Eagles regain lead in fourth

Jalen Hurts found Dallas Goedert for a 9-yard touchdown pass that gave the Eagles the lead with 9:55 remaining.

The Eagles benefitted from a penalty against the Cardinals on third-and-9 from the 14.

It was Goedert's third TD of the season and Hurts third TD pass of the game. Hurts is 14-for-17 for 134 yards. Goedert has five catches for 47 yards.

Eagles 28, Cardinals 21 (9:55 Q4)

James Conner makes one-handed TD grab

Kyler Murray passes to James Conner, who made a one-handed grab in the front corner of the end zone. Murray threw to Michael Wilson for the successful two-point conversion that tied the game.

The Cardinals looked in control during the drive. James Conner broke free for a 22-yard run. Murray completed a 13-yard pass to Wilson, who made his third catch of the game.

Cardinals 21, Eagles 21 (2:01 Q3)

Cardinals find the end zone

Michael Carter caught a 21-yard pass from Kyler Murray to move the Cardinals inside the Philadelphia 10. Carter got the ball on the next two plays, including a 6-yard touchdown catch. The score was his first in a Cardinals uniform.

During the drive, Murray completed passes to Michael Wilson on back-to-back throws. The completions of 11 and 6 yards helped establish Wilson, who hadn't caught a pass in more than a month.

The Eagles gained 5 yards before punting on their first possession of the second half.

Eagles 21, Cardinals 13 (6:35 Q3)

Julio Jones adds second TD of the game

With 16 seconds left in the first half, Julio Jones caught his second touchdown pass of the game.

The Eagles ran nine plays — each of them a pass, including on third-and-1 — to cover 75 yards.

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts is 11-for-13 for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Four Eagles — AJ Brown, Julio Jones, Dallas Goedert, and DeVonta Smith — each have at least 30 receiving yards. The ground game has picked up just 21 yards on seven carries.

Eagles 21, Cardinals 6 (0:16 Q2)

Cardinals add field goal before half

Matt Prater was good from 34 yards for his second field goal of the game.

Arizona worked its way inside the Philadelphia 20, but stalled after a false start penalty just before the 2-minute warning.

Kyler Murray is 11-for-15 for 90 yards with an interception. James Conner has 14 carries for 72 yards. What the Cardinals don't have is a touchdown after making trips inside the Philadelphia 20 on all three of their possessions.

Eagles 14, Cardinals 6 (1:50 Q2)

Eagles' Sydney Brown embarrasses Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals were threatening, but Philadelphia's Sydney Brown quickly changed that.

Brown, a rookie, intercepted Kyler Murray's pass to the end zone and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown.

The point after made it 14-3 Eagles.

Arizona had worked its way to the Philadelphia 24 with a series of Murray passes to Rondale Moore, Elijah Higgins, and Greg Dortch.

Murray's target on the interception was Michael Wilson, but it appeared something was lost in communication when the quarterback called an audible at the line. Wilson has not had a reception since Nov. 12 against the Falcons.

Eagles 14, Cardinals 3 (11:44 Q2)

Eagles work quickly to take lead

Julio Jones caught a 12-yard pass from Jalen Hurts to cap a 75-yard, nine-play drive that lasted just 4:33.

The Eagles converted on fourth-and-1 from the Cardinals 20, thanks in part to a penalty against the Cardinals. The longest play of the drive was a 23-yard pass to tight end Dallas Goedert that carried the Eagles across midfield.

Eagles 7, Cardinals 3 (0:36 Q1)

Arizona Cardinals settle for field goal after Kyler Murray fumble

Kyler Murray's first pass of the game went to Trey McBride for 26 yards. The tight end has been one of his favorite targets since his return.

James Conner carried for 5 yards before Murray found Greg Dortch to convert on third-and-5. Later in the drive, it was Murray finding Elijah Higgins for a 7-yard pass on third-and-6. Conner picked up the team's third first down and Murray scrambled for another.

A fumble by Murray on first-and-goal from the 3 put the Cardinals in a hole. They settled for a 28-yard field goal from Matt Prater. The drive consisted of 14 plays and took 7:46 off the clock.

Cardinals 3, Eagles 0 (5:09 Q1)
