The average log cabin life expectancy is on par with traditional homes' – but many last even longer with proper care and maintenance. Talk about a worthwhile investment! On average, a log cabin's lifespan is anywhere from 20 to 100 years – or more!

A log is a large piece of unprocessed wood made directly from the trunks of trees. Conversely, timbers are made by cutting logs into precise shapes that are used for timber framing. While timbers have quite uniform shapes, logs vary greatly with the shape of the trees from which they are sourced.

Fir and spruce are very common log home species choices. They have a very large diameter and length availability. Fir and spruce are also very strong and rigid. This gives designers and engineers the ability to design large structures with minimal butt joints or breaks.

Starting in 2014, Lincoln Logs were manufactured by K'NEX Industries Inc. In late 2017, K'NEX was bought out by Basic Fun, Inc., of Florida. Pride Manufacturing, of Burnham, Maine, manufactures Lincoln Logs for Basic Fun, and the rights to the IP are owned by Hasbro.

We can trace the origins of log cabins back to Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, where nomadic tribes used log cabins as temporary shelters. The cabins were built with logs stacked horizontally and interlocking at the corners.

Log cabin construction has its roots in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Although their precise origin is uncertain, the first log structures were probably being built in Northern Europe by the Bronze Age around 3500 BC.

These structures are susceptible to ground squirrels, mice, ants, and termites, because their wood construction can easily be chewed and damaged by local critters. Although rodents are usually easy to detect, insects can truly wreak havoc on a log cabin because their damage is less noticeable.

One of the most obvious is damage from wood-destroying insects and birds, including termites, carpenter bees, woodpeckers, and more. Typically, homeowners insurance will not cover insect or pest damage. Many people don't find this out until they have a claim – often an expensive one – that gets denied.

Log homes require more maintenance than other types of houses - though not as much as many people would imagine. The most important thing to keep in mind is that logs deteriorate over time without care and maintenance. Therefore, you will have to clean, re-stain and re-caulk your log home from time to time.

Some lenders will increase their lending rate to 90 percent of the cost of the home to help offset the additional money needed when an appraisal comes in short. The bottom line is if log and timber homes are plentiful where you are building, you will likely not have any problem with the appraisal.
